Analog vs Tape Delay
Delay is one of the most essential of Guitar Effects, and one of the earliest. In fact, our own Tim Murphy even said on a recent episode that if he could only have one pedal, it would be a delay. Les Paul (R.I.P) and The Edge may agree.
Today we look at 2 of the earliest types of delay.
Tape delay is, of course, the one that started it all. A brilliantly simple device where the sound is recorded on analog tape and then played back a short time later. There are many stereotypes about tape delay being “dark and lofi”, and we are going to test those today using our trusty EP3 Echoplex.
Analog delay, which came a couple decades later, sought to replicate the tape delay effect in a smaller and more practical package. Does it succeed? Well, not exactly. But the results are their own totally awesome thing.
Both Tape Delay and Analog Delay are legendary for their own reasons, and we are discussing the strengths, weaknesses, and quirks of both. We hope you enjoy it.
